Actor Jerry Mathers Presented ''Heroes in Education'' Award to Group Volunteers

California State LotterySACRAMENTO, CA, (NAMC) - On October 29, 2005, "Operation School Bell," a group of volunteers from Southern California, was presented with the California State Lottery's "Heroes in Education" award on "The Big Spin(R)" show. Accepting the award on behalf of "Operation School Bell" was organization Chairperson, Suzanne Kahane.

For more than 15 years, an army of volunteers have shared their time, talent and energy with "at-risk" students, providing them with the basic essentials needed for the classroom. The students receive new shoes, clothing, backpacks, grooming products, and an assortment of other goodies picked out by the children themselves. These items allow the students to look and feel just like their fellow classmates, which improves their self-esteem, promotes learning and encourages them to attend school on a regular basis.

Actor Jerry Mathers was on hand to honor "Operation School Bell." Mathers is best known from his role as "The Beaver" in the television classic Leave It To Beaver.

The California Lottery's "Heroes in Education" award has been presented monthly on "The Big Spin(R)" show, since 1999. The Lottery partners with celebrities to present these awards which recognize special individuals who volunteer time and resources to their schools and communities.
